WHAT IS A SPINAL ADJUSTMENT? [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

One of the most common and well known therapeutic procedures performed by Doctors of Chiropractic is spinal manipulation (BETTER referred to as a (“chiropractic adjustment”). The purpose of a spinal ADJUSTMENT is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for an individual. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, allowing tissues to heal.

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours. Compared to other common treatments for pain, such as over-the-counter and prescription pain medications, chiropractic’s conservative approach offers a safe and effective option.

WHAT CAN AFFECT MY POSTURE? [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

What can affect my posture?

To maintain healthy posture, you need to have adequate and balanced muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint motion in the spine and other body regions, as well as efficient postural muscles that are balanced on both sides of the spine. In addition, you must recognize your postural and movement habits at home and in the workplace and work to improve them, if necessary.

Poor posture and poor movement patterns can lead to excessive strain on our postural muscles and may even cause them to relax when held in certain positions for long periods of time. You can typically see this in people who bend forward at the waist for a prolonged time in the workplace. Their postural muscles are more prone to injury and back pain.

Several contributing factors can put a strain on posture. The most common are stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak postural muscles, abnormally tight muscles, and high-heeled shoes. In addition, decreased flexibility, a poor work environment, incorrect working posture, and unhealthy sitting and standing habits can also contribute to poor body positioning, leading to pain or overuse injuries in some cases.

Can I improve my posture?

Awareness of your posture, along with an understanding of healthy movement strategies, will help you consciously correct yourself. Dr. Zo can further assist you by recommending exercises to strengthen your core postural muscles. He can also assist you with choosing better postures during your work or recreational activities, reducing your risk of injury.

THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF CLASS 4 LASER TREATMENTS [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

In addition to tissue healing at the cellular level are other significant biological effects. With treatment from laser light, cells get rid of waste products quicker. The result is quicker tissue healing of tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Class IV laser therapy stimulates the growth of fibroblasts; these collagen-based cells lead to wound and tissue healing. Once again, this promotes faster healing.

Tissue healing cannot occur without blood flow. Class IV laser therapy aids in the development of new capillaries in wounded tissue and temporarily widen other blood vessels. This helps wounds heal faster because of increased blood flow.

A leading cause of pain is scar tissue or the formation of fibrous tissue. Consequently, class IV laser therapy for tissue healing results in less scarring. Another leading cause of pain is inflammation. Laser light produces vasodilation, an anti-endemic effect that triggers the body’s lymphatic drainage system.

Laser light also helps reduce nerve sensitivity, reducing pain signals sent to the brain. In tissue healing with class IV laser therapy, the brain and adrenal gland increase endorphins and enkephalins, the body’s natural pain killers. Laser light produces photons that get absorbed by chromophores, which in turn promotes immunoregulation and longer-lasting pain relief.

WHY IS POSTURE IMPORTANT? [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

Why is posture important?

  • We do not consciously maintain our posture; instead, certain muscles normally do it for us.
  • Several muscle groups, including the hamstrings and large back muscles, are critically important in maintaining our posture. These postural muscles, along with others, when functioning properly, prevent the forces of gravity from pushing us over forward.
  • Postural muscles also help maintain our balance while we move.
  • A healthy posture helps us stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions that place the least strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities.

Correct posture also:

  • Helps us keep bones and joints in correct alignment so that our muscles are used correctly, decreasing the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in degenerative arthritis and joint pain.
  • Reduces the stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, minimizing the likelihood of injury.
  • Allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and, therefore, preventing muscle fatigue.
  • Helps prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain.

8 BENEFITS OF HEALING WITH A CLASS 4 LASER [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

Pain ReliefLaser decreases nerve sensitivity by decreasing bradykinin; a pain eliciting chemical. It normalizes ion channels [cellular gatekeepers] and releases endorphins [body’s natural pain reliever] and enkephalins [related to endorphins] that produce an analgesic effect. It also has a pain-blocking effect on certain nerve fibers.

Anti-inflammatory/Healing:   Laser increases ATP, which is stored energy [ATP is the acronym for adenosine triphosphate]. This increased energy accelerates the repair processes of the cell. Laser also causes a widening of the arteries and veins around the injury which helps to remove damaged cellular debris and increase nutrients and oxygen. White blood cell activity is enhanced leading to a more rapid repair process. Also, some molecules that increase inflammation are reduced, and beneficial antioxidants like superoxide dismutase are increased.

Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth Photons of light from lasers penetrate deeply into tissue and accelerate cellular reproduction and growth. As a result of exposure to laser light, the cells of tendons, ligaments, nerves and muscles are repaired faster.

Improved Vascular Activity  Laser light increases the formation of new capillaries in damaged tissue, which speeds up the healing process, and closes wounds quickly.

Trigger Points:  Laser is particularly effective in extinguishing painful trigger points. It is also an effective way of stimulating acupuncture points without the discomfort associated with needling.

Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation:  Laser therapy reduces the formation of scar tissue following tissue damage from repetitive motion injuries, cuts, scratches, burns or surgery.

Faster Wound Healing Laser light stimulates the building blocks of collagen, which is important in the wound healing of damaged tissues. Collagen is the essential protein required to replace old tissue or to repair injuries. As a result, the laser is effective on open wounds and burns.

Stem Cell ActivationLaser increases the number of stem cells, which enhances healing.

CLASS 4 LASER FOR HEALING [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

About Class IV Laser

Class IV lasers are more expensive than older class lasers. The expense does not go to waste, because the treatment is very effective for the following conditions:

  • Soft Tissue Trauma
  • Muscle and Tendon Sprains
  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Myofascial Trigger Point
  • Tennis/Golf Elbow
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Degenerative Joint Conditions
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Nerve Pain
  • Sports Injuries

How long does each treatment take?

Higher power of Class IV lasers treatment times are less. Most treatments take minutes. The typical treatment is 3 to 9 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated.

How long before the results are felt?

You may feel improvement in your condition after the very first treatment. Sometimes you will not feel improvement for a number of treatments. Each treatment is cumulative and results are felt after 3 or 4 sessions.

How often should a patient be treated?

Acute conditions may need daily treatment, particularly if they are accompanied by significant pain. More chronic problems respond better when treatments are received 2 to 3 times a week, tapering to once a week.

  • Acute problems usually need 4 – 10 total treatments.
  • Chronic problems can take up to 10 – 20 treatments.

What’s different about the Summus Class 4 laser used by Doctor Zo?

It’s the only LASER on the market with a four Wavelength/Triple Delivery Mode. Summus was the first to employ three infrared wavelengths simultaneously of 800 nm, 905 nm, and 970 nm and combine them with a 660 nm visible beam. These Four Wavelengths are more efficient, healing the tissue while also aiding in pain relief. Combine this with Three Distinct Delivery Modes (Continuous Wave, Frequency Modulated, and Intense SuperPulse), and he has a therapeutic laser solution that offers as much variety as the conditions and patients he treats.

Class IV therapy laser treatments by Doctor Zo provide a deeper depth of tissue penetration and ultimately provide a dose that results in positive and reproducible outcomes. Higher wattage also results in faster treatment times and provides results unachievable with low wattage lasers. These lasers provide a wider range of treatment options than Class I, II, and IIIb lasers due to their ability to treat both superficial and deep tissue conditions. Laser Therapy is the use of red light to create therapeutic healing. Class IV effects include less healing time, less pain, better circulation and decreased swelling. Laser treatment has been FDA cleared since 2002 and is now widely used in the United States.

What are the benefits of Laser Therapy?

Laser Therapy stimulates tissue repair, healing and growth. The red laser light accelerates wound healing, decreases inflammation and pain, and scar tissue formation. Class IV laser treatment provides great results for chronic tissue pain and has virtually no side effects.

How Does Laser IV Treatment Work?

Infrared light stimulates tissues at the microscopic level helping to increase transportation of nutrients to cells in the body. This initiates the production cellular energy and improves tissue function and health.

What Does Class IV treatment feel like?

There is little or no sensation during laser theapy. Every now and then you can feel mild, warm or tingling. Areas that hurt prior to treatment may be sensitive before pain goes away.

Are there any side effects or associated risks?

Very few side effects have ever been noticed. Occasionally some old injuries or painful spots may feel agitated for a few days, as the healing process completes.

Can it be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment?

Yes! Laser Therapy is often used with other forms of therapy, including physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, massage, soft tissue mobilization, electrotherapy and even following surgery. Other healing modalities are complementary and can be used with laser to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE GOOD FOR ATHLETES? [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

With regular chiropractic care, your athlete may notice increased flexibility and reduced muscle stiffness. This helps your child’s body meet the demands of youth sports, and it also helps decrease the risk of injuries from pulled muscles.

Athletes put a lot of pressure on their bodies every time they train, and physically intense activities can create problems with spinal alignment and movement. Receiving the appropriate chiropractic care can help undo the damage and prevent injuries before they occur, all while promoting movement that’s pain-free.

Athletes getting routine adjustments may notice improved athletic performance, improved range of motion (especially in endurance athletes), better flexibility, increased blood flow, and may suffer from fewer injuries.  Because spinal adjustments will reduce the irritation of the nerve roots between the vertebrae, the healing time from minor injuries can be shortened, improving performance.

Both high-impact and low-impact athletes can benefit from routine spinal adjustments.  For high-impact athletes, it increases performance and flexibility and lowers the risk for injury; for low-impact athletes (golfers, tennis players, and bowlers), routine adjustments can help relieve the strain that is being placed on the body.  Chiropractic care offers a natural way to treat and prevent many different ailments that often plague athletes.

DO YOU HAVE A GOOD POSTURE? [ by DoctorZo.Health ]

Ergonomic and movement strategies can improve posture and help prevent injuries.

  • Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down.
  • Healthy posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension against gravity.
  • Our everyday movements and activities can affect this alignment and put stress on joints and muscles, sometimes resulting in pain and potentially permanent damage if left unchecked over time.
  • Utilizing proper ergonomic and movement strategies can help prevent these problems.
